Travelling solo for once, I took another bicycle taxi back to our distant hotel. Along the way, my Spanish-only speaking "driver" started yabbering to me in agitated fashion. Eventually I understood that there was some police check ahead and he needed me to get off the bike. Next thing I know he diverted down a side street into the back alleys of Baracoa - my distrusting mind recognised that this was a big opportunity to be scammed or worse, so I clung tighter to my camera bag. Fortunately after a walk I passed the bicycle taxi police and was re-collected by my driver. Other tour group friends reported similar happenings, only with fines for their drivers.
