Airport [I]

Baracoa's tiny Gustavo Rizo airport, from where I was scheduled to depart for Havana on the 4pm flight. This journey, in a small plane operated by a Cuban airline, was the bit of my trip to Cuba that most concerned me. The scene at the gate did nothing to reassure me, with a motley disorganised gathering of people. As I waited to check in, the mood changed when a phone was answered - the flight was cancelled. It turned out that the plane due to take us back to Havana had departed too late to reach Baracoa before dark - and this became significant because the landing strip had no lights.
